Not fancy but large clean comfortable rooms in an excellent location of downtown. Checked into Petite Queen room with pooch, expecting small maybe smelly room. Pleasantly surprised. Immaculate room, large, fireplace, jacuzzi tub, vaulted ceilings. Very sunny inviting room. Certainly not fancy but very nice. Wonderful breakfast in morning. All is for $100. Well worth it, would definately go again.

Martha is so kind and helpful. It is so nice to talk to someone so honest and decent. I love supporting family-owned businesses, If you want a truly Californian experience go to Zaballa, too bad the rest of America can't be so pleasant.

Booked a room at Zaballa House on Expedia.com . En route to Half Moon Bay from SFO, I called to confirm our reservation. I had to leave a message and the woman there called back to say they had no record of our reservation. I called Expedia.com and they faxed Zaballa house confirmation of our payment via Expedia. When we got to Zaballa house they confirmed our reservation. We were expecting a bed and breakfast type place: charming, maybe some antiques, quaint, warm, etc. They put us up in one of the motel-like rooms surrounding the b and b. The room was plain and very bare bones with an overly pungent smell of chemical cleaner and potpourri. My husband began having trouble breathing in our room and my skin became very itchy. We stayed in the room for about 20 minutes before we called it quits and went to talk to the hotel manager to ask for a different room. He was very helpful and since the place was pretty dead, seemed to have no problem setting us up in a room within the Zaballa house, not in the motel part. That room was nice enough, but we had a sour taste in our mouth after the nasty smelling motel room. Breakfast the next morning was okay, but not worth the price of the stay. I wonder why they would put us up in the motel part if the B and B was empty and we had paid ahead of time. It felt a little off to me. Would not return.

Wow! What a place! I went to half moon bay one weekend to get a long-awaited massage from a wonderful lady, Chantelle at the Grotto of the Sacred Heart ( rebirthingsoul@gmail.com ) sans kids and husband two blocks from the Zaballa House. It was one of the Best massages I've ever had (a combination of Reiki and full body massage - incredible!). Anyway, back to the Zaballa House. The price, room accomodation, staff and Full Continental breakfast were awesome and reasonable to say the least. The rooms were quaint and comfortable. I slept wonderfully that night. I've been to many places around the world and I must say that this is one of the best places to stay. When travelling to Half Moon Bay, I wouldn't even think about staying anywhere else! I'm sure you'll love it too! P.s. Try Zaballa House's famous home-made granola cereal served at breakfast - it's awesome (have I said this enough?)!

We had a nice little stay here. The location isn't on the water, but it is nice, right in the middle of a pleasant walking down town (though be aware that most of it is closed by 6pm), and right across from Pasta Moon, which is fantastic. The suite we stayed in was half the price of anything nearby, incredibly spacious (20ft cathedral ceiling), and had a great jacuzzi in it. The staff was pleasant and welcomed us with wine and cheese in the evening and in the morning we had a delightful breakfast with fresh fruit, home baked breads, and quiches. I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you are on a budget and still want a really nice room and pleasant service. There was also no requirement to stay multiple nights, which was key for me.

We really enjoyed this B and B. I wanted to pack up the Inn Keeper and take her home with me. Cute as a button. She was wonderfully helpful with things to do in the area. The breakfast was one of the best I have ever had at a B and B. Very good quiche. I would stay here again if I am ever in the area. Really comfy bed. You can walk all of HMB from the B and B. Big Fan!

Do not give your credit card until you confirm that you have hot water!! We stayed in room #10 with a jacuzzi tub and discovered that there was no hot water while trying to fill the tub for a leisurely soak with the Sunday paper. The useless woman at the counter came over and confirmed that we did indeed know how to operate a bath tub and that there was indeed no hot water. She said that Jose would be over to fix in 30 minutes and that we could take a shower in the main building. They mysterious "Jose" never showed up after 2 hrs and we were ready to leave. Our friends bought us the hot tub room stay as a birthday gift so the front desk refused to compensate us. My husband left his number asking the manager to call us. That was on Dec. 23 and we have never heard back. Zaballa House turned what was supposed to be a relaxing time into a major disappointment. It is a cute B&B with customer service and quality at standards below that of a cheap, freeway motel.

I've stayed here about 3 times over 15+ years and each time it's been in the adjacent building, not the historic house where your breakfast is served. I never knew at booking where I'd be placed. During our recent stay I booked the room through hotels.com . The room description included air conditioning and kitchenette. Our room had neither. In fact it was completely drab and the thin walls gave way to the neighbor's romantic interlude...thankfully brief. ;-) The next morning at breakfast I complained about the description of the room and the actuality. Unfortunately no one looked at the online description and blamed it on my reading the description for the suite but...I later checked and I was correct. Thankfully a suite was available and we spent our second night in a much nicer room with a kitchenette and thicker walls. Nowhere in the Zaballa House is there air-conditioning. I request that hotel owners check how their hotels are described on these websites because I think you are responsible for this, not your customers.

We stayed here for a night for my husband's birthday this March. It wasn't the Ritz, but it was nice, comfortable, and clean. Our room was small but cozy and we enjoyed the gas fireplace. It was also in a great location at the middle of downtown, easily within walking distance of several cafes and shopping. The walls seemed a little thin so I was worried we would hear everyone eating breakfast in the morning since we were close to the breakfast area but we both slept soundly and even slept in which is a rarity for my husband. Minus a star for the shower situation. It was a large jacuzzi like tub with a shower hose and no curtain. It was very awkward to use and not spray water everywhere. There was also no full length mirror. Random thing to complain about but important if you want to see what you look like when you leave! Pricing was competitive and again, the location was great. We'd stay here again!

Zaballa House was the only disappointment in an otherwise lovely mid-week getaway to Half Moon Bay. Normally, I don't bother to write negative reviews, but I am making an exception in this case for a few reasons: 1) My husband sent an e-mail the next morning and has heard nothing back from the management; 2) Our misgivings have been expressed by many other Yelp reviewers, apparently without much impact; 3) Zaballa house has so much potential! It could be a charming, affordable way to spend time in a beautiful setting. But instead of the quaint B&B described in their website (and promised in the e-mail confirmation) we ended up with a no-frills, basic motel experience. And even there, it fell short. We were in one of the upstairs motel-like rooms in the adjoining business park building, rather than in the historic old main house. (The website does not reveal that there are two very different kinds of accomodation, nor can this be arranged in advance.) The room was odd. Almost too spacious for what was in it. At one end, a decent queen bed with pretty quilt and pillows, facing a big old TV in a cabinet. Across the room, a gas fireplace.. In between, the incongruous touch of two leather love seats dropped into the room. No place to put clothes: no hangers in the closet, no hooks, no chest of drawers. Wifi didn't work. No desk or other writing surface. No phone or clock. Spacious modern bathroom with decent towels and walk-in shower, but otherwise sparsely appointed with a small bottle of shampoo and a single bar of soap. Coffee set up with two large canisters of Folgers' coffee. Glad to have it, even in the bathroom, since coffee wasn't available until the 8 am breakfast in the admittedly charming old main house. Cleanliness: Pretty good, although we also noted stains on the carpet. A little jarring to discover a bottle of K-Y lubricant left in a drawer in the bedside table. Food: That was our first disappointment. After battling rush hour traffic, we had looked forward to the promised late afternoon wine and cheese reception. Oh, that was just on the weekends, the desk clerk said. Breakfast the next morning was okay. Basic cold buffet with optional slice of a quiche-like breakfast pie. Fortunately, we'd had an absolutely wonderful dinner the previous night at the Michelin-recommended Pasta Moon across the street. The confirmation e-mail had promised a long list of amenities. Most were absent, including: Room with "Vaulted ceiling, antique tub, antiques, original oil paintings." Alarm Clock Bathtub Hairdryer In Room Iron Ironing Board Free Newspaper Radio Telephone A more accurate description of what is really being offered here would be fair and far less disappointing.

Good things: big room, big comfortable bed. Good breakfast. That's about it. Suite #10. Fireplace broken, deadbolt broken, no A/C. Decorated with old, faded and dusty fake plants. Needs to be updated and they can atleast supply a spoon to scoop the coffee with! Not nice enough to command that price.

Not much, checking in the woman at the counter was friendly. The room marginal, three wire hangers to hang your clothes on & two hooks on the wall, only room for one bag so mine ended up on the floor. The room decorated with threadbare cheap cloth curtains. A bath tub, no shower curtains, you either sit or flood the bathroom, I choose the flood. It was hot the day we got there, 91 degrees, no way to cool the room, no fan or ventilation. Egg pie for b-fast not good, the next day LEFTOVER egg pie, cold. The cook (?) by her attitude let everyone know she didn't want to be there and didn't want us to be there. There are much better B&B's very close by. Oh yeah, no coffee or tea before 8:30am at breakfast and none after, a glass of water only at breakfast. It's all going down hill so go somewhere else to get the B&B experience.

This place is nice! 2 different couples got engaged there the night we checked in. Great rooms, ( as long as your in the main house ). The breakfast is worth it. Beds are super soft but firm. The whirlpool tub was VERY nice. ( just bring your own bubble bath! )

I stayed here last weekend. Pros :The staff was nice and helpful. I enjoyed the complimentary breakfast in the am, Wine & Cheese at night. No ghosts in room six just as an FYI. Cons : I showed up on the hottest day of the year Sept 6th 2013 and the room has no AC. I had trouble sleeping even with the windows open. They did provide me with an older fan to help. Bed was hard and squeaky. Bed posts were not attached and people wrote on the inside. Furniture was worn out. No TV. Also the bed and floor had a white granular powder on it. Was it soap? Unknown. Room was small, no curtain on the shower/tub. No ghosts! Boooo!

An excellent value in downtown Half Moon Bay. Boasting a prime location on historic Main Street, the architecture and decor at Zaballa House are as rich in character and thoughtful details as the sundry boutiques, galleries, antique shops and eateries that surround it. Add year-round reasonable rates that consistently meet or beat the lowest going prices for accommodation in the Half Moon Bay area - from B&Bs to chain motels, even those with less desirable locations - and it easily makes Zaballa House a top choice for lodging when I visit this charming coastal community several times each year. When a dispute with an online travel agency through which I booked a recent stay at Zaballa House unfortunately necessitated cutting that stay short - through no fault of Zaballa House - everyone that I dealt with on Zaballa's end was prompt, considerate, accommodating, and thoroughly customer service oriented throughout the entire process.

What a cute lil bed and breakfast. Came and stayed here with my bff while she was on business. The room is REMARKABLY clean. I mean literally no dust anywhere including the baseboards. That might not mean much to anyone, but it definitely means much to me. Classic tube tv, you have to pay for wi-fi, and the most charming, healthy breakfast spread. Fresh raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, pineapples, bananas. Yogurt, cottage cheese, homemade breads and pastries, quiches. Incredible. If you can't afford the Ritz here, this is your place. It's wonderfully located too! In the heart of Main Street.

I am rating based on service, quality of rooms, and quality of food (basic bed and breakfast). My husband and I were looking for a nice B&B for our Wedding Anniversary and stumbled over the Zaballa House on the Internet. We figured lets check it out! We booked our room $144.00 with a fireplace. When we arrived the front lobby door was locked, there was a 80's type phone on the wall and a sign that says to basically call for someone to unlock the door. The place needed some fixing/upkeep. My hubby and I have been to nice B&Bs (in Monterey) so we know quality. First off the front desk lady was rude, not pleasant, seemed angry, doesn't smile (we think she hates her job) and she had 2 other people (I believe one is the maintenance guy and the other is the maid) just hanging out with her (they were carrying conversation in Spanish while tending to us). It was really awkward. Then she gives us our room (#2) keys. We entered the room and there was no fireplace! Wow. So I go back to her and tell her that on line we reserved a room with a fireplace and she gives us another room, but the fireplace doesn't work. Then she was finally a little bit nicer. She allowed us to check out the suites #12, #11 and #30 (better quality rooms, they still needed some upkeep though). I think we chose room #12 and paid the difference. It had a Greek ambiance, a living room, little kitchen, bedroom, fireplace, patio area (not that great), huge Jacuzzi (very cute). FYI... Some of the rooms are just gross (dirty couches, nasty carpets) so be careful. In the morning there was a younger girl in the front desk and she was wearing sun glasses which is VERY unprofessional. I mean really???? Sunglasses in the morning time while customers are talking to you???? And she also not happy about working there. SO RUDE!!!!!!!! The fruit, bread, bagels etc... was fine but the original unhappy front desk lady offered us quiche and we can hear her microwaving the food. The quiche was yuck... The utensils were questionable... If the service was better than it would of been a 3.5. We wouldn't recommend this place to our friends and family. Zaballa owners - word of advice please think about investing in fixing the Zaballa house or you will start losing customers... All in all my husband and I enjoyed our 3rd wedding anniversary (LOVE PASTA MOON Restaurant)!

This place is amazing. Sure, I was 20 years younger than everyone else in the place, but it didn't matter. The rooms were vintage/antique-everything, it was super QUIET yet centrally-located, and breakfast was yummy. The owner, Sheila, was a darling in that way that your middle-school reading teacher who liked you but always yelled at you for something can be. Bring your girl here on your way up the PCH for major brownie points.

My best friend and I are pretty into haunted/supposedly haunted hotels (form your own opinions, we don't mind, we've heard it all! haha). We had read online, on a few websites actually, that Zaballa House possibly hosted a ghost or two and decided to take a one night visit. Half Moon Bay is pretty close to us (San Jose, CA), so we decided it would definitely be worth it to check out Zaballa and see what they had in store as well as tool around HMB because we love the area. I read some of the reviews on here, no mention of ghosts but that did not sway our choice, and decided that it also seemed nice enough of a place to stay even if nothing paranormal happened. Seemed like your standard small no frills B&B (fresh fruit, bagels, juices, and delicious looking pound cakes), which is just our type. We don't need anything fancy. This seemed perfect. So we made a reservation a couple of days in advance, requested room 6 (rumored to have ghost activity) and things were settled. We arrived a little after check-in and the whole process went smoothly. The front desk agent was nice and greeted us warmly as well as wishing us a wonderful stay and to let them know if we needed anything at all. As far as customer service goes, which I am big on as I work in hospitality as well, the agent was quite nice and refreshing (even when we probably bored her to death by talking about why we came). We checked into room 6 as requested because it was in fact available and it was really cute. The modernized claw foot tub in the bathroom was lovely and the bed, with the "interesting frame" as they described it, was very comfortable. There was no TV which was actually really neat because it gave my best friend and I even more time to relax and play some games they provided. We had a window overlooking a courtyard and that was really nice to have open at night with the gentle breeze and the morning noise when we woke up. Very enjoyable. I really liked reading the guest book while people watching outside. We utilized the fireplace "just because" seeing as it was there, and it provided nice warmth and glow. We stayed up late to see if anything spooky would happen, and though nothing did, minus some settling noises and a weird vibe, we still had a blast freaking ourselves out and laughing about it. Overall, the room was really nice. There were only a couple of downsides to staying at Zaballa House. Nothing major, but noteworthy, is that they are not a 24 hour desk so it is really hard to reach them by phone. I would have made a reservation online but I had wanted to ask a couple questions and request room 6, and it was slightly annoying that I had to leave three messages and never get a call back then FINALLY was able to reach someone. But really, that wasn't a big deal and we did get what we asked for so I guess I can't be too annoyed. The other thing to mention, which is specific to just us, is that when we checked out, a different nice older woman was at the desk and asked how our stay was. We told her it was really great and we liked the room but we were bummed we didn't have anything paranormal happen because we had a read a bunch of times that stuff could. She laughed and said "Yeah, we aren't haunted, at all. I have no idea why people say that, kind of silly if you ask me." Well...uh...okay...thanks for making us feel dumb after we enthusiastically told you it was basically the main reason we came. Oh well, can't win 'em all. In general, for what it was, and it is what we expected minus the lack of ghosts, I would definitely stay at Zaballa House again if I were to be in the area and needed somewhere to stay. The rooms were nice, the food looked simple but great, staff was friendly, and prices were decent. P.S. If you're a night owl like we both are, definitely get one of the outer rooms and not one in the main house. We felt bad everytime we had to leave and come back because it's SO quiet in the main house except for the stairs, which we had to go up and down each time.

Poor customer service. Bate & Switch - Switched rate and charged my card without my approval. Staff not able to take care of problem - owner did not return my many calls. Will not go back and will not refer to this place. There are a lot of great options within a block away with much better honorable ethics.

DO NOT TRUST THEIR WEBSITE! This place is a sham. Their website is SO misleading it is unbelievable. Luckily, my boyfriend and I only live about an hour away, but I feel bad for those who travel from far distances to only be disappointed. This is NOT a bed and breakfast. B&Bs are cozy, welcoming and charming... this place was neither. The website claims that for the basic room at $89 you get a room with either a whirlpool or antique tub, a fireplace, and wine and cheese. It also says that check out time is 12:00. Our room had a standing shower, no wine and cheese and check out time was 11:00, not 12. In addition, all of the pictures they provide on their website of the rooms make them appear as though they are all within a cozy house when in reality most of the rooms are in a BUSINESS park that wraps around the house. Very misleading. The room was too big, with barren walls and cheesy furniture. The bed was rock hard, they only provided one pillow per person, the comforter smelled like sweaty butt and the towels were tiny and rough. Also, the front desk staff was anything but welcoming. She never even smiled. I would not recommend this cheap MOTEL to anyone. Spend an extra thirty dollars and say somewhere romantic and comfortable.

I was so torn over my two or three star review of this motel. The lady that runs it is SUPER sweet and very nice, so I feel bad giving them only two stars, but I was just not thrilled with my first ever "bed and breakfast" experience. We ended up in a room that was not in the actual house, (Room 20, in the "Wing Rooms" which include a fireplace and a tv, which was a Brocsonic from 1980 and still had a vhs. The brochure said they all had queen beds, but ours was only a full) so maybe that is why. But I was just not thrilled. It was all completely awful though, so here are my pros and cons. Pros Super sweet, very nice owner (the other women there are less friendly though) Free light breakfast (although we opted for Starbucks on the 2nd day of our stay.) Cute exterior with shops and eateries all close by Nice soap in the rooms Cons Cleanliness (dirty coffee pot, broken blinds, cobwebs on the ceiling fan, dirty ledges, I kept everything off the floor and couch as much as possible, the room just felt unclean) Uncomfortable bed (like couldn't get into a REM cycle because I kept waking up and my back was KILLING me the next day) Very sparse decor (the room was HUGE and just felt empty) No ice machine or air conditioning We were here on business that the client had booked the room, but there was no romantic feeling at all to the room my husband and I we were in. We actually tried to spend as little time as possible there. If I were to go back to Half Moon Bay, I would stay at the Oceano Hotel & Spa which looked gorgeous and on the ocean...

We spent our wedding night in their suite ... and it wasn't very sweet! Ended up with a clogged toilet and the bed was super uncomfortable. The only think that was impressive was the giant bath tub. I wouldn't stay here again.

I booked two rooms, a deluxe queen(for myself and the man) and a standard queen (for my mom). I asked for a floor level room so my mom didn't have to climb stairs. I called to confirm several weeks before and so I thought I was good to go. I specifically booked this hotel because the website depicted some very charming rooms. When they gave us our keys, I checked out my room and loved it... except for the stench of their cleaning chemicals, the creeky bed and the incredibly thin walls. THe cleaner left an awful odor in the room. Went to help my mom to her room, realized her room was upstairs and not close to our room at all. I tried to have them switch rooms. (I've worked in a hotel before, it's not that hard to switch rooms especially since we were the first ones to check in that day. ) So after all that my mom got put in a room with double queen beds and a 'modern' style. Not at all charming like all the pics on the website. Old comforter, terrible smell of cleaning chemicals, no A/C, no fan to air it out. We weren't thrilled with the experience and the front desk gals were incredibly inattentive. Walk in the front door and they wouldn't look up from their cell phone games to acknowledge you. Won't stay there again.

We stayed here for Memorial Day Weekend this year for 2 nights, pretty affordable and laid back. We loved our room, no TV, fireplace, old fashioned, and a bathtub with no shower.. so washing our hair and getting adequately clean took some teamwork. I did feel like every little step and move you make, people in the other rooms can hear, but whatever. I forgot the name of the little old lady that owns the place, but she was so sweet. We got there around 3 or 4 in the afternoon and she had wine and cheese out. At night they let us put our beers in the fridge downstairs, which was cool. Parking is easy and close. The breakfast in the morning was good. They had a couple different quiches. It was awkward though eating with a couple different older couples, not a big deal to me though. I just wanted to eat. So just don't expect a whole lot with this place, you get what you pay for. The house is nice and very clean. I would come back here :)

Well we made the reservation late AND arrived late but the lady working the desk was very gracious. She had to leave a birthday party to check us in but was still very friendly. The room was beautiful and the bed sooooo comfortable. Breakfast was very satisfying. Will certainly go there again and again and again!

My partner and I went down for a one night stay to relax, walk the beach, shop in the great little shops. We really needed a break from stress, having spent several days in hospital over the holidays. Cutting to the chase - our wonderful jacuzzi tub was unusable because there was no hot water. We discovered this at 7:30a.m. So we had "cowgirl" baths, meaning cold and minimal. When we told the "sweet grandma" manager, she gave us a $20 credit for a future stay! Let's imagine: what if upon arrival, we were told we had a nice room with a toilet and sink, no tub or shower- for the price of $169 including tax? That's what we had, if fact. Can you believe the comp of $20 on a future stay? There will be none. Weird place with uneven service. The only good things are location and breakfast. We had stayed before and it was decent, so we returned. Paid more, got way less. Stay somewhere else.

Came here for honeys birthday! I'll be honest I've never been to a B and B so I didn't really know what to expect. Zaballa was reasonably priced so I was excited to have a romantic weekend to celebrate honey being born. Checking in was pretty quick and painless, I agree with other yelpers that the front desk isn't overly welcoming and inviting. Luckily honey and I were too busy giggling about the obvious 30 year age gap between us and all the other guests to be bothered by the front desk's lack of personality. Upon getting to our room (#7) we loved the old historical feel Zaballa has. Personally the painting at the top of the stairs creeped me out, but again we had a good laugh. Room it's self was pretty nice, very antique feeling. I immediately drew my self a bath in the huge tub to do some pre-dinner relaxing. After dinner (Miramar Beach! Amaze balls!) we returned to Zaballa around 11. Not that we are teenagers by any means I will say it felt like sneaking into my parents house after curfew. Overall we had a nice time and may return in the future. I'd break it down as follows: PROs: Great location Yummy snacks Fun historical items to look at/ read Large tub Fireplace Clean CONs: Jets in whirlpool are so loud I though my fillings would fall out Front desk lady is kind of cold Bed is SQUEAKY (as in it sounded like we were making a porn when in reality we were just laying there) Crowd is a bit older (Prepare to get stares and odd looks if your under 40 or have tattoos) All in all Zaballa was a nice time, but we will probably skip paying for the B and B atmosphere if we're going out or celebrating something.

I have no idea what Zaballa means, but to me it sounds like a gypsy curse that a gypsy would put on to say...whallahahhha... fill in the random rambling..... I spent the night here with my mom, that dog, yes I call him that dog because.....that dog had chewed a hole in my rug, that dog has dug up random holes in my back hard... that dog has eaten my dryer lint out of the trash. The young lady at the front door, I didn't get her name, but she was kind of hot with her tight clothing was very nice. There were these cute mini muffins at the front desk, which suited a woman...you feel like you're not eating a full muffin...so you eat two, which equals a full muffin in the end. Anyways, the room was nice and comfty. Bed was large and soft. There was a fireplace which burnt during the night. Oooooo and the breakfast in the morning, it's enough to give you a food coma and have you stuffed for the rest of the day. There were all kinds of fruits, not just the ole continential breakfast where they set up a bowl of apples, bananas and oranges. It's the real deal. There was chopped watermelon, cantelope, strawberries, blueberries, cut up bananas. There was also cottage cheese, cream cheese bagels, bread, orange juice, milk, coffee, tea. Not your usual Motel 6 breakfast here. It was delicious! My only pet peeve is that the stairs to go up and down to the hotel is sort of slippery, especially since it's painted pavement. Also at night and in the morning, it's foggy, so there's a layer of moisture on the stairs. I was wearing shoes that had no traction on the bottom and all of the sudden, to my surprise I ended up slipping down the stairs a couple of steps. I ended up with a big fat bruise on my ass, elbow and arm. It still hurts. Eeech.

I've stayed here twice: once alone and once with my husband. On my own I slept in room 7 located upstairs in the main house overlooking main street. It is also the only room that has a small TV. I don't know about the thin walls as I was the only one in the main house that night. Yes... a bit creepy since I had never traveled alone to begin with and now I was the only guest. The staff leaves around 9PM. The second time I was with my husband and we booked the Casablanca suite. It's a much bigger space than the rooms in the main house and also has a patio for you to enjoy. There's also a mini kitchen area so if you'd rather eat in you have all that you'll need for it. I gave this place 3 stars for the lack of wifi

  • Jenn K.

Sorry Zaballa House. You deserve 1 star for a great location of right downtown Half Moon Bay, but that's about all you have going for you. My experience with this bed and breakfast was the complete opposite of charming. Maybe it is the off season and the low occupancy meant me and the other 2 guests weren't worth any effort, but as a guest I disagree. My room, #20, was stark and bare and uninviting. The love seat was stained and there were black marks all over the walls. The bathroom was clean, but that's all I can say about it. When I checked in the woman asked my name and gave me a key... No ID check and no request for my credit card for incidentals or anything. Also, no real interaction: she told me breakfast was in the dining room at 8:30a and then dismissed me completely. I felt like my presence was not wanted at all and I was interrupting her by being there. My room was above the retail spaces across the parking lot and the building was loud. Between street noise and loud pipes and loud neighbors (footsteps, doors closing, etc.) it was not a quiet night. Breakfast was... Interesting. I arrived around 8:20a in the hopes there might be coffee before the 8:30a breakfast. Nope. There was another couple who arrived with the same hopes and we chatted in the FREEZING cold lobby while we waited for other signs of life. At 8:45a the staff rush in with several bags of groceries and then proceed to lay out a buffet of bread for toast, bagels, yogurt, cereal and some fresh fruit. Eventually there was some orange juice and coffee and the offer of a reheated frozen quiche. Nothing special and everything seemed to be store bought/right out of a box. Reading the other reviews I hope my experience was unique and that I just hit them on an off night, but I won't be staying here again.

We have stayed here three times while exploring the San Mateo coast for houses. Great rooms (we have only stayed in the main house) and a fun old school bed and breakfast vibe. The innkeeper is a crack up. The wine and cheese in the evenings is a good place to meet fellow travelers. Breakfast is fun, too, with a great selection of hot homemade food, pastries and fruit. BTW, this hotel is about a mile from the beach, so don't believe the pictures that might show otherwise.

You only get one chance to make a first impression and Zaballah House blew it. It is hard to get past the difficulties in booking the place to enjoy what was good about it. The on line price $30 less then the quote I got when I called the establishment, yet they were unable to meet that price. I made reservations for two rooms on line, yet when I arrived they claimed to only have one room reserved and my confirmation numbers that I had received by email were of no use to them. The owner was there and stated how she hates computers and much preferred people who call in person. When I told here I tried to book in person but the rate different was an obstacle she shrugged and stated "You might have paid more but we would have had both reservations." When I suggested that if she didn't like online reservations and the system didn't work she shouldn't offer it she just stared at me. Then when I went to check out they charged me more than the quote because they forgot to figure in tax! To top it off the beds were rock hard, the bedspreads cheap and tacky, and the curtains were inadequate to provide privacy from the street outside after dark. Breakfast the next morning was merely adequate and we were forced to go out and seek decent coffee at a coffee shop in town. Folgers, really!? We will not be returning, or sending our friends here!

Price is reasonable and location is conveniently on Main Street, near shops and galleries. Owner, Sheila, is lovely--warm and friendly; treats you with the hospitality of a sweet grandma! Decor is homestyle, maintained reasonably (i.e., they did it themselves), and very clean. Amenities are basic. Iron and hair dryer is available, but shared--if you're in one of the main rooms, you'll have to ask for it from the front desk. The main building is an old house right between shops and the walls are thin. You can hear everything--from guests talking in the next room and people walking the hallway or up/down the stairs....remember, it's a b&b. So if you're not used to sleeping in a full house, or expect a standard hotel room, then go to a hotel. Breakfast is served with an array of cut fruit, bagels, toasts, quiche/waffles, coffee, and orange juice. More than the continental breakfast you'd get at a hotel.

A charming bed and breakfast in the middle of downtown Half Moon Bay. My girlfriend and I stayed there for a romantic long weekend and we had a good time. The room was pleasant although the need was rather loud. I recommend straying on the main house and getting a room with a fireplace. The owner is very cordial but the rest of the staff is only minimally polite. I recommend you try their homemade granola at breakfast!

Room 23 is perfect for 4 people! Huge room and very comfy! But I have heard that every room is different. Some are even haunted. I rave about their breakfast spread!! Amazing spread!! There were fruits, breads, yogurt and coffee was delicious!! Waffles are made to order and 4 different types of quiches to choose from. Breakfast alone is worth it!! Cute B&B, owners really took good care of this place. Great location to the shops and a short drive to the beach.

I stayed here for a weekend get away with a BFF and the staff was very accommodating and welcoming. Sheila especially was quite the warming personality. They initially messed up on our bill but she was very prompt in understanding the situation and didn't give us a hard time at all. She was very generous with wine, cheese & crackers. The breakfast in the morning is very very cozy and plentiful. Lots of fruits, toast, they offer waffles or quiche. We had room 6 upstairs in the main house. Highlight was that there was a claw foot bathtub with a jacuzzi. It was awesome. However the decor was a bit lacking. It was a bit minimal and there could have been little things that would have made the room a 100%. We did some rearranging. I had to drag one of the desks in the restroom to use to put our toiletries on. We also dragged one of the night stands to be used as a coffee table as we had our wine, cheese & crackers. Also, if you sleep in like I do, be aware in the main house that you're going to hear everyone downstairs talking and eating breakfast.

We were relegated to the "annex" which are the second floor rooms above the shops which surround the original Zaballa house b&b. I wasn't too concerned as I am not a huge fan of old Victorian decor. Our room was clean and spartan in decor, but that was fine as we weren't there to spend our time in the room. We enjoyed eating breakfast at the communal table in the main house. Met a couple of young ladies travelling from Switzerland who followed us to explore the Mavericks just down the road. So fun to see one of our favorite spots through their eyes. Zaballa House is fine place to stay as you explore the area.

We stayed in one of the suites with the huge jacuzzi tub which was awesome. Great room and very nice breakfast with lots of fresh fruit. It was fun to bring our dog along. Would have been nice if there was wi-fi.

We spent a night in Zaballa House since it was the most classy economical pet-friendly lodging in the area. We were assigned room #20, which is upstairs above the shops and faces the rear parking lot and court. The room was away from the road noise, and that helped significantly since Zaballa House is on a busy street. The room looked like our first apartment - scarcely furnished with no warmth to break up the sterile white walls and ceiling. It was not within the main house, but instead above the shops in a new separate building, and hence did not carry over any of the historic charm of the old house. Nonetheless, the room was large, clean and although it was pet friendly, had no lingering odors or signs of pet habitation. One complaint: the bed and pillows were nearly medieval sleep technology. The cheap mattress and planar pillows made for a very rough night. I've slept in nicer motel beds. Overall, a glorified motel in the modern rooms, and likely a nice B&B inside the main house (we wouldn't know ; not pet friendly in the main house).

I was stuck between 3 or 4 stars but just thinking about how much fun we had there I had to just go 4. The little house was adorable, Im so glad we got room #4 instead of that ugly outside part of the hotel. I was there for a wedding and it was also super fun that everyone in the house area seemed to be there for the same thing. When they arrived they quoted that our room wouldnt be ready until 3, we had a rehearsal dinner to get to and thankfully they worked with us and go us in by 1 so we could get ready for that. Room 4 had a fireplace, a nice sized bed, a love seat and a huge jacuzzi tub. I would have loved a shower but the shower nozzle worked just fine for me. As soon as I got into my room I asked for some tea and they were super nice and I had my own little tea pot in my room. The bed wasnt as uncomfy as people are reviewing, my husband and I had a lovely time there and really enjoyed the feeling of the house, sadly we didnt see any ghosts haha :) The breakfast was super tasty, yes there is a wait because its just the little lady who works at the front but other than that we all loved the fruit, toast and homemade granola. I want some more of that asap. Id stay there again in a heartbeat.

My husband and I have never stayed in a B&B, so we thought we'd give it a try, thinking it would be more romantic. We were planning on rekindling some sparks while away from our 3 kids. We reserved a "deluxe queen" room, which was located upstairs in the main house. We both felt like we were staying at grandma's house. There was minimal storage for our stuff and no closet to hang clothes. The bathroom had a large tub with a shower nozzle, which my husband did not enjoy! But our largest complaint...THE BED!! SQUEAKY SQUEAKY SQUEAKY!!! One move, and BAM!! It was also very hard! The place was noisy (bed, dripping faucet, early a.m. trash truck both mornings), lights shining in windows and doors, and just plain old. The downstairs was cute. The breakfast was good, though it was served after 8. Staff was courteous. We would never stay again, nor recommend.

This is a great place for a reasonably priced, city getaway! Right on Main Street in beautiful Half Moon Bay, Zaballa House is a great B and B in this sleepy little Bay Area town. Historic, charming, friendly staff, clean, and classic place to stay. Added bonus, Zaballa is right across from the delicious Pasta Moon! Check this place out!

Stayed here last saturday when we were in town visiting the family. At my sister's wedding a GF of mine stayed here and said it was great and it's right in the middle of downtown HMB which is super convenient! We didn't have reservations but the woman at the desk, Sue was so great!! Not only did she get us a fab room with a jacuzzi (didn't even know it was an option) but she told us about 3 great restaurant deals in town and at the water (she knows a few front desk people at the restaurants so she was able to pull strings). Super great reccomend the jacuzzi rooms and sushi across the street for a romantic night. Sue even got us massages at the Ritz which is a great place in itself but more expensive to stay at and not worth the price (go there for the amenities, stay here for the location and price). So everything considered, super romantic, great location, get sushi, ask for Sue and hopefully she won't be mad I told everyone about her connections!!

We had a great time at the Zaballa House in Half Moon Bay. Our room was great. It was decorated so nice and clean. (Room # 12.) The staff at the Zaballa House were so nice and helpful. Shelia made us feel right at home. Breakfast was also nice. Loved the pumpkin Bread. In the middle of downtown and close to all the shops. Close to the beaches too. The only thing negative I have to say is it was very noisy. The B & B is right on Main St. so that could be part of the reason.

We were in room 11, one of the suites (French themed - this is also the suite that is pictured on zaballa house's site with the pink&green cloth draped above the fireplace). Having stayed in one of the more basic rooms, the suite is an incredible improvement, and much recommended (and often only $20-30 more expensive). The room had beautiful dark hardwood floors, a beautiful vaulted ceiling, a semi-private patio (gates block out your own private section, but the patio itself extends over 3 rooms), fireplace, and two person jacuzzi tub. It was very nicely sized. Breakfast was delicious, and the location is superb, plus our dog was able to come along - nowhere else is there such a cheap dog fee ($10), on top of such a nice/cheap B&B. Things to note on the slightly less than perfect side: 1. the room was HOT when we arrived, and we left open both the patio door as well as the main door, and that swept the room of hot air in 20 minutes or so - no big deal. But there is no ac, and the ceiling fan seems to just push down the hot air hidden in the vaulted ceiling. 2. the bed is somewhat uncomfortable, although huge and nice linens. We would for sure stay again, and plan to.

+ just came back from hmb and i was pleasantly surprised by my stay here after reading so-so reviews! because of the reviews, we requested a stay in the main house to avoid any pet allergies in the pet-friendly portion of this b&b. room #6, a corner room

I agree with other reviewers, the website is misleading. We stayed here for one night and couldn't wait to leave. One example of this place is when we asked lady/owner for a bathroom stopper so I could take a nice bath. She came back and handled us a wash cloth and told us to use this. I know this is funny, but when if you were in our place, it wasn't. Also, my husband was in a conversation with another guest. She interrupted and made a rude and insulting remark. Plus, this place is kind strange.

Zaballa House was a delightful place to stay-- excellent location right off Main Street in Half Moon Bay, an easy walk to shops and restaurants and a 5-minute drive to the beach and gorgeous coastal views. Both staff members that we met at Zaballa House were fantastic--Sheila and Sue. Informative, friendly and very warm, felt like we were staying with family! The breakfast here is a huge plus- fresh fruits, homemade waffles and juices. My only complaint if I'm looking for one is that our room was fairly small with a bed with an older mattress that sank a bit in the middle. The room did have a large gorgeous bathtub though, which was lovely.

Really disappointing. I would only recommend this place if you had no other options. We stayed 3 days and 2 nights in the middle of the summer. Pros: It is quaint and interesting if you enjoy history because it is the oldest building in HMB; it has many original pieces of furniture and antiques throughout the house; it is in the center of downtown so easy access to Main street shops and restaurants; it is a relatively large B&B with 21 rooms so one can usually find an available room; our room had a jacuzzi tub with jets that was really enjoyable. Cons: Our bed felt squeaky and uncomfortable and had very rough sheets. The bathroom sink fixtures fell off every time I turned the knob. There were no screens on the bedroom windows so bugs flew in, but I had to leave the windows open because it was so hot upstairs. No ceiling fans or any fans anywhere. No extra towels, and the ones they had felt like sandpaper. No TV (although we didn't mind) or alarm clock. The complimentary breakfast had fruit and a small sliver of quiche with no water, soda, or iced tea. I could hear every step of someone walking up the stairs, conversations on the first floor, kids running around in the back alley, and the tenants in the room next to mine. The clerk who helped us was not very friendly and appeared very quiet and preoccupied.

Nice place, not great, but not terrible either. We stayed in No.10, very clean and spacious. We took advantage of the jacuzzi which was a nice feature. There was a lot of boutique-y shopping and only one LOUD bar nearby. We had lunch in nearby Princeton (the Silver Star- AWESOME!) and the breakfast at Zaballa was just OK . Ho-hum.

This was our second visit to Zaballahouse. The suite we stayed in this time was absolutley perfect. We also found out we could bring our dogs in the future. We didnt get to see the owner this time, we spent most of our time in the room or at the beach. This place is always clean, great staff, and close to everything. Our room this visit was not part of the actual house, and I actually liked that. I like that there are options.

We really enjoyed our stay here! The staff was very courteous and helpful. Our room (Room 7) was fairly spacious and had a switch-operated fireplace which kept us warm. The place definitely has charm as a B&B which also means it might not have the most up-to-date amenities (no wi-fi, no TV), but it does set the right tone to relax for a quiet evening. The breakfast was very tasty and satisfying, and the wine and fruit from 5-7PM, though not the finest quality, was a nice treat. The location right on Main St. is very convenient for shopping and dining.

Neat, well maintained, $110 per night includes nice breakfast of bagels, quiche, cereal, and fruit. Zaballa House was the first hotel we saw cruising up main street, and it looked too good to pass. The hotel serves wine, cheese and crackers on Saturday night starting at 5. Our hostess Sheila was very pleasant to deal with, and courteously entertained us drunks, while thrashing out the pros and cons of the US and Australian education systems. We decided to go for a bike ride to Montara, then got lost and arrived at Half Moon Bay instead. I think we saw much more, and the views were just beautiful, a real surprise. We managed to piss off lots of people on the way; for being on the road, for being on the footpath, for being off the path, for going too fast etc. Is anyone available to advise me on how to ride around here? As per usual, road signs are just confusing. One said "cyclists must use 35" with no explanation on where the 35 is (if we were paying attention, we'd have known we were on it already). Ended up on a quiet, sealed cycleway/walkway next to San Andreas lake and Lower Crystal springs reservoir, both perfect. There's one climb on the 92 going to the coast. In the traffic, managed to overtake a new red Camaro 3 times. So, on Saturday night we starrted having the complimentary wine and cheese. The wine hit us quickly after the ride, and we all thrashed out the education system with Sheila our host. Feeling the glow, I lost my camera at this point, the only valuable thing that I own. My old bike was nicked here, and the one I'm riding now I got for free. We walked about 100 yards to the saloon, and met Carlos the local Azteca. He told us about a concert with 5 bands, and one was supposed to be Mexican. So we turn up, and there's one band, and everyone's Mexican. We stuck out like dogs balls, but didn't mind as we were toasted already. The old ladies watching us giggled at our attempts at dancing banda. Stumbling out the front, we got given a Corona, which I thought was generous, and then asked for cash. Well I've only got a twenty, and he promised to give me some change. One good samaritan gives us $3 to put in, and warns us to ask for the 20 back. Feeling at one with the people, I tell him not to worry, and we did get 12 back in change, and couple of more beers, so it was all good. I don't know when my girlfriend lost her wallet, but the temporary panic turned into relief since it was handed in already, bless them, minus the cash, curse them! Zig zag back to the saloon for one more, and wake up with a headache, and without sunglasses; god knows where they went. Ever had that panic where you wake up and think "where's my mobile phone / camera / wallet"? I really didn't have my camera, and had no real clue where I left it. Got out at 8am, probably still stinking like a brewery, and Sheila had put it behind the desk. We hoover down half the table at breakfast anticipating a big days ride. Heading up highway 1, we hope to get through Devils slide somehow. Its a construction zone, and definitely not passable. A kind jogger passing by shows us a side road, which starts about a half mile off the freeway in bushland. We'd have never found it otherwise. The track winds up over the hills right next to the sea and has truly spectacular views. Some sections are bitumen, but has been washed away totally in parts. Got back home at last, after having food thrown at us on the highway(didn't get hit), and trying to share the roads with cars and walkers. I wish we could just shut Golden Gate park off to cars altogether. Half moon bay gets 5 stars.

I would give NO stars if it was possible. Booked & paid for a 1-room Suite to celebrate our 23rd Anniversary. When we checked in, the staff, talking in Spanish said something about the room being occupied. (Guess they thought a blue eyed-blonde wouldn't understand) We went to our room and it was NOT a suite. I went downstairs to talk to them and after much discussion they admitted they did not have our room, despite charging us for it! They knew it when we checked in and said nothing! They admitted it was their fault, totally. They told me they were booked, so essentially 'too bad'. I pushed and they offered to refund a little of the extra $ we paid, but were still charging us more for the room they gave us than what was listed in their own brochure. Not very honest, eh? Thanks to Booking/Hotel.com. I had used them for the first time for this reservation and called to ask them about this mishap as I was told by Zaballa that they could not even refund the paltry amount (less than $29 on a $260 reservation) until Monday when they could talk to Hotel.com . Bookings/Hotel.com immediately took charge and got us into another B&B in Half Moon Bay. We moved and got a suite there that totally blew Zaballa out of the water. Guess I should thank Zaballa for its pitiful business dealings as we ultimately found a much better place. We are now at The Mill Rose B&B and we will most definitely be back.

Our stay at Zaballa House could not have been more delightful. The suite we got, room 12, was fantastic with all of the amenities we could want. The house is the oldest home in Half Moon Bay and even has a history room which, as a teacher, I can say would be worth a field trip to learn about the local culture. Sheila, our hostess, was as attentive as she was charming. The evening wine and cheese gave us a chance to meet travelers from other parts of the world, something that rarely happens in large, cold hotels. The breakfast was tops with fresh fruit and lots of locally produced goodies. It was far better than the usual bacon and eggs buffet one often finds passed as breakfast these days. If you like history, local culture without surrendering any of the creature comforts, this is the place. For the local, you can not beat the prices either.

Half Moon Bay is like the city I'd build if I only had a little money. It's quaint without being annoying. The Zaballa House is also quaint without being annoying, and in a charming way. I stayed there New Years Day and we enjoyed the room. It was smallish, but felt comfortable. There were antique-y things and the bathtub was really nice. It was cheap enough for me not to complain and we got every dollar worth. The breakfast was nice, and being a guy who doesn't eat eggs, I was happy with the breads and so on. They had run out of Orange Juice by the time we got down there, but what are you gonna do? I'd like to stay again, someday. The location is perfect for walks to the shops and restaurants and then back to the room to warm up, because it's always freakin' cold!

We had a great night at Zaballa House! We walked in at about 3pm the day we wanted to stay there, and they were so nice and even gave us the weekday rate even though it was Saturday night. It's very close to everything - right in the middle of downtown and only a 15-20 minute walk to the beach. There's a full breakfast included with the room (Sheila will tell you all about it when you arrive), and on Saturday (and maybe Friday?) nights they have free wine and appetizers in their little sitting room. Turned out we stayed in a pet-friendly room, but we didn't have a reaction at all which is really surprising since we are both VERY allergic. The walls are a bit thin, but other than that it was a delightful stay and we would definitely go back if visiting Half Moon Bay again.

We stayed here on a Saturday night because I was officiating a wedding in the area. It was nice but it's probably easier to spell it out in +/- . + They gave me a reduced rate on the room because I was going to a wedding nearby. ($120 a night) + The service was very friendly. + The breakfast was very yummy - crust less quiche and waffles plus all the usual stuff. - The room we got (#5) was on the ground floor and had windows to the street and alley (noise/not much privacy). We were woken up by all the noise from the dining room in the early morning which made me cranky. I felt mildly better when I remembered that someone else made breakfast. - The rooms are nice but not exactly posh. ? - everyone waiting to check out had a complaint. I shelved my complaint about the noise from the dining room because I felt bad for the lady at the desk. In the end I'd probably stay there again to have a nice non-corporate hotel to sleep in but probably not for a special weekend getaway. I'd be sure to get a quiet room upstairs though. PS: they say it's haunted but I didn't get any bad vibes - maybe it's a friendly Casper type of ghost.

In an effort to get away from San Jose and enjoy a night away from the city I picked Half Moon Bay. I looked on yelp for something that would suit my need to get away along with the check book. Zaballa's House seemed like the right place. I called the hotel and booked myself a room. Now, if you can picture an antique house (literally a house) with lots of rooms, that's what it was. I walked in and checked in, the receptions was very young but very nice. She walked me to my room and opened the door, to the left there was an antique bath tub. Very very cute! The room was pretty small but big enough for me. I had been warned that there was in TV, so I was prepared and brought a lap top and of course some pick me up Sex & the City episodes. The bed was comfortable. The walls are a bit thin so you can hear everything going on outside. The nice thing about Zaballa House is that it is located in downtown Half Moon Bay and you an walk anywhere. The ocean is kind of far maybe about a mile or so. They do prepare breakfast, I slept in and missed it but the muffins they were baking sure smelled good!

For $110 a night, including wine, cheese and salami at check in plus a full breakfast (waffles, quiche, granola, yogurt, fruit and coffee)- I thought it was a pretty good deal. The staff was nice and the room was reasonably comfortable and quiet (until 8 am).

The hubby and I wanted to find a bed and breakfast, not too far from home, that we could hide in for a romantic New Years holiday. We were on an enamored Half Moon Bay kick and thought that would be an excellent location for such a trip. After searching around on the internet, comparing prices, and value we opted for the Zaballa House. Zaballa House claims it is the oldest house in Half Moon Bay, but it is kept in superb condition with sparkling hard wood floors and bright shiny windows. The decorating didn't quite live up to the house itself, as the decor was on the wrong side of the Goodwill/ Grandma's House vibe. We stayed in room 8 for it's antique tub and fireplace. Unfortunately they kept the B&B so hot, that the only way we would consider using our fireplace, was with the window open. Main Street traffic and January cold doesn't exactly lend itself to romantic evenings... For the two breakfasts that we had there, they served a frittata one morning and a quiche the next, along with a continental breakfast area of bagels, muffins, and the such. It was tasty, but not remarkable. We had a pleasant time, but I don't think that we would return. There are several other B&Bs in the area, and the idea of checking them out, is far more appealing than returning here. *On an extra note, they have a cute kitty that wanders the house. If you have allergies, you might want to consider that.*

The only one redeeming quality this place had was its location and cleanliness. Otherwise, 1. the room was HOT, like birkham yoga hot, we tried airing out the room while we were at dinner only to return to the same kind of heat we first left with.2. They said there was internet, but there wasnt, too bad I didnt write down sightseeing activities before we left sacramento! The lady at the front desk had a hard time giving us directions to a resturant I remember seeing on hwy 1. 3. Breakfast was mediocre, closer to continental then a bed and breakfast I thought. Won't be coming back here!

This place was awesome. I don't know about any of the other reviews. Probably bottom feeder yelpers, with nothing better to do than demand free shit while hustling people if they don't get their way. Yes, we know what those yelpers look like! We stayed here for a wedding and we told them initially we would be coming in very late. But, as luck would have it, we got in around 3pm. I forget the name of the proprietor, but she was so accommodating. And, yes we were the noisy neighbors :) The place had so much charm, how could anyone speak badly of it. They had a breakfast thing going, and quite honestly it was very, very good. Right there on main street. This place is not a waste, or a joke. Everything worked. It had a great deal of charm. Free parking. We hope this review serves you well.

We booked this place, thinking it would be a bed a breakfast such as we stayed in on the Main Street in Monterey. Let me begin by saying, were this in the hotel category (and it should be: it is by no stretch of the imagination a B&B) it would be in the 1-2 star range, thus my rating. I agree with other reviews. This place is extremely dirty. The pillow shams which were really the cases and only pillows on the bed, smelled like old, dirty hair. As did the bed spread (who uses those anymore anyway! Use a duvet and wash it between customers!). And it was a cheap Goodwill 1970's bedspread and I don't mean a kind with any charm. I'm not a snob. But B&B means some kind of charm. We walked in the door to check in and there were three young girls (20's? Early 30's) behind the counter. It felt like we were interrupting their conversation. The cashier was very rude and spoke extremely fast and it was hard to understand a thing she said. Next we were told our room was "next door" which is a building above some stores and is little more than, again, a 1-2 star motel. Which is how we ended up in the main "house"...we asked for a better room. Luckily when we came back there had been a shift change and the new person was extremely friendly and helpful. I am pretty sure had it been the initial lady I would have gotten a refund and left. It feels like the owner lives far away and purchased this as an investment and is just collecting a check without ever visiting or investing any care into this place whosoever. At one point we talked about how it would have been nice to have a book with some recommendations on places to eat etc. As I was coming up the stairs tonight I saw some ratty, dirty and falling apart photo albums at the stairwell. I opened them and inside were falling apart dirty pages of what I can only assume are old menus from places around here. It was very off putting. This feels very much like staying in your great grandmother's home where nothing has been attended to since the Carter Administration. In addition the rooms are supposed to have a fireplace. We turned ours on and it quit working after five minutes. I think the owners should be ashamed of themselves.

Don't waste your money, this was a huge disappointment. Seriously, this was the worst place I've ever stayed! The only reason why I gave it one-star was because the staff was friendly and the bathrooms were clean. The fireplace in our room didn't work and the toilet in our room wouldn't flush properly either. Which was probably why there was a plunger in the bathroom. The furnishings appeared to have come from the local thrift shop as they appeared to be plucked from the 1940's. The carpet in our room was so dirty that I wouldn't walk on it without shoes on and the bedspread didn't look like it had been washed in years. Also the bed was uncomfortable. One positive note, our bathroom was clean. My suggestion, pay the extra money and stay at another place up the street or on the other side of town.

Sure a tad expensive but its summer. Room was cute nothing fancy... But good enough. The 1 star reviews seem to be very high maintenance people. Besides the wedding party one... Valid. Free breakfast and great staff!!

We stayed at Zaballa House over the weekend with our beloved dog. Pros: - Pet-friendly - Centrally located in downtown. Easy access to shops, restaurants, etc. - 5 min drive to beach/trails - The owner is a pleasant and friendly older lady. - The wine & cheese and nachos & salsa served from 5-7pm were delicious - The breakfast was simple but delicious with a plethora of fruits, toast, sweet breads, orange juice, and coffee. The main breakfast entree were either waffles or quiche (3 different kinds). You could even have both! -Lots of parking at the back of the hotel -Room was spacious and the TV had cable Cons: - Rather $$$ for a decidedly 3-star hotel but options are rather limited for pet-friendly accommodations... - The carpet had some stains on it - The bathroom drawers had not been cleaned out. I was rather disgusted to find leftover pantyliners, a used bar of soap, and a disgusting brown stain. - The WiFi was not detectable on my iPhone and had a very bad connection with my boyfriend's Samsung. Thankfully, we were able to connect with the Wifi from one of the downstairs shops. In spite of the negatives, we did have a pleasant weekend.

WONDERFUL stay. We were in the main house, #4. Quiet, quaint. The stay was everything we were looking for. The location is perfect, there were farms within walking distance where we picked up fresh fruit and were able to drive down the coast to Pigeon Point lighthouse for a day trip. The beach was so close we went first thing in the morning and seemed to have the entire coast to ourselves. We went to sleep smelling cinnamon as we were close to the kitchen but couldn't figure out what they had been cooking. Breakfast the next morning was amazing. Fresh quiche and all of the fruit you could eat. I will put this on my list of places to stay the next time we are in the area.

This was a great place to stay. We stayed in #26, up top in the new building, and it was spacious and- bonus!- was the first room I've stayed in with NO Gideon's Bible that I can remember. After reading some of these reviews, I called ahead to ask to switch to a room in the old house but was told that we'd have to pay the difference of around $75/night, so I declined. There was some confusion (because we checked in after the front desk was closed), but we got our room #26 and it was fine. The fireplace was warm, the fan cooled the room down, the coffeemaker worked, the water pressure was fine, the bed & love seats were very comfortable, the room was clean, and we had a big shared deck & separate entrance. The next morning we went down for breakfast and the clerk (not the owner- we met her later) told us that after I called, she actually assigned us to a room inside the old house- FOR NO ADDITIONAL MONEY- and that we could move into that one instead. We checked it out (room #6)- and yes, it was a very quaint, cute room with a jacuzzi/bath tub (!!!). But we decided to stay in the new building because we had more room and we hadn't heard any of our neighbors and figured that meant they hadn't heard us. Still, that was a really revealing moment- that they'd do that on a Friday night, even though we ended up not taking them up on it. Hung out for breakfast both days- chock full of fruit and quiche- and wine & cheese one night. It was all very very filling and satisfying. We met the owner at the wine & cheese thing and we got along great. She's funny, sassy, and reminds me of my take-no-b.s. grandmother. Cons: The one thing that skeeved me out was the half-empty bottle of KY lube in one of the drawers (sigh), and the one thing that skeeved out my gf was the coffee maker being in the bathroom. (I didn't care) The one weird thing was a lack of a dresser- though the room in the old house had one. It must be room-by-room. Also, we had to use the free wifi of the store below us because the Zaballa wireless system wasn't visible on our devices, probably because it's in the old house and we were about 100+ feet away with half of a building between us and it. More Pros: One GREAT thing- besides the absence of the Gideons- was that the coffee offered were 2 actual, store-bought cans of regular and decaf Folgers. In other words- no wasteful plastic one-cup coffee packets! As a coffee addict, I really really appreciated this. Conclusion: My gf met the owner before I did, and she was told that "if you're nice to me, I'm nice to you," which I think explains a LOT of the so-so reviews here. We are people who've worked service industry jobs and are unassuming, tolerant travelers who do not demand 5 star service in a 3 star place- though we don't let ourselves get walked over. The owner and the clerk were both very friendly and helpful and responded well to being treated in a friendly, polite way. (Neither my gf nor I have a problem calling people out when there's a problem, but we start from a position of respect for others and it's up to the other people to prove that they're not worthy of that) It's not a traditional bed and breakfast (after all, it's split into 2 buildings on a busy downtown street), so expecting some kind of Thomas Kinkade fantasy is unrealistic.

I've stayed here twice now, and have not been pleased. Let me start by saying that when I stayed here, it's always been in the building across from the office. The little lady at the front was very kind and great to work with, but if only the rooms were as nice as she. Unfortunately, the rooms I stayed in were dirty and when I say dirty, I mean there were still crumbs on the floor (Cheetos) from the previous tenants and I was hoping they would get vacuumed up by the second day, but never did. There were obvious big brown stains on the carpet, that didn't look incredibly permanent, and nothing a little spot remover wouldn't remove. Those were my two biggest complaints. Those things could have easily been taken care of, but the fact that they weren't, was just simply laziness or lack of caring about the customer on their part. I understand the building is old, but many of the repairs are simple to do and would make a HUGE difference. Also, I could not get the wifi to work, which was very frustrating! If the price/night was cheaper, I probably wouldn't be complaining as much, but I've found cheaper places that were much nicer. The breakfast was good, but that's about it. My advice to management is to take a little more care of the rooms, and to the future lodgers, ask to see the room where you'll be BEFORE you book. As I said before, I'm sure not ALL the rooms at the Zaballa House are like the ones I got, but I wasn't impressed :(

Great location on Main Street. Really cute building. It seems this hotel has two parts - the bed and breakfast part and the motel part. We stayed in the motel part. It is on top of the shopping center to the left of the Zaballa "House." The room was decent. Very clean, but needed some updating. The carpet was stained, the bed not so comfy, and no tubs in these upper rooms. Also, we could not get the wifi to work and logged in using the business downstairs. Pluses included the gas fireplace, a large shared deck, a cute handmade-looking quilt, friendly staff, and that you can bring a pet here. Also, if you are staying in the motel half, it is a good deal price-wise!

Expedia has this place as a 4.3 star, they must have family, friends or employees put in good reviews. No one in their right mind would rate this above a 2 star. Room 24, Squeaky uncomfortable old bed, stains on carpet, a ceiling fan that clinks, coffee maker in the restroom by toilet, eww. Noise from every hotel room around us. It is 1am and my husband and I can't sleep because of our neighbor snoring loudly with T.V on. We hear every conversation from our neighbors because the walls are so thin. Total cost for two nights was $288.96 this place shouldn't be more than $50 per night. I honestly feel like we got ripped off, what a fraud. Husband and I travel to many countries, including within the states and we are not ones to complain but this was truly bad. Words from the experienced, don't stay here.

I really hate leaving bad reviews, but Zaballa sadly deserves it after the ordeal we just went through with them. 1st I will list the positives: the rooms are VERY cute, prices are great & the breakfast is lovely. The woman who is in the kitchen in the mornings (Sheila I believe) is a lovely, friendly, welcoming woman. She said she was the owner, but my experience was with the (other?) owner Dave and it wasn't a good one. Sheila - if this is your husband and your B&B you should have a serious talk with both him & your staff because they are all incompetent at best and it cost you a good review from us. I reserved TEN rooms for my wedding party in October (my wedding was 04/26/14) I called around December/January & found out they had ONLY set aside SEVEN rooms when I needed ten. The girl that runs the front desk is named Carla - avoid her & deal with the manager Maria when booking because she'll screw it up otherwise. She also doesn't know how to use a fax machine (I asked her to fax me their pamphlet so we could fix the room mix-up & she said "I don't really know how to do that" ) - it's not rocket science. The manager Maria fixed this for me & changed it to 10 when I spoke to her later in the day. Fast forward to March. I called to double check all the bookings & spoke with the owner Dave. He made a change for me moving someone staying with kids into a larger room telling me that was better as that room had a pull out bed. I check in THE DAY OF MY REHEARSAL to find out that room DOES NOT have a pull out bed at all & I had to waste time moving people around & fixing their mistake. How does the OWNER not know his rooms. I also went to visit them in March to double check everything & I found out they DOBLE BOOKED MY ROOM the night of my wedding. They also double booked my MOH the night of the wedding. They ALSO double booked another person the night of the wedding. All but 2 mistakes were fixed but that 3rd mistake remained an uncorrected problem. All but 3 of their 17 rooms were booked by my entire family & wedding party. We had a relative flying in was LA who didn't have a place to sleep on Saturday because of their INCOMPETENCE. I was repeatedly told the owner Dave would call me back. I still haven't heard from this guy. They never fixed the problem. They never apologized. They never so much as gave the illusion of caring about the issue. The only suggested fix was from Carla when she said "can he go stay at another hotel?". No Carla. He cannot. They had a more expensive room available & I told Carla to just move the double booked guest to that room at the same price as ours as an easy fix. She said she couldn't make that call - only Dave could. WHO NEVER CALLED ME BACK. We had to call every single day leading up to our wedding trying to reach him & we never did. Dave - if you're reading this - you're an a**hole. How dare you make me spend the weed leading up to my wedding calling you every day trying to correct mistakes that a) YOU CAUSED & b) were actually easily fixable if you would simply empower your management or call a customer back. Maria - they should empower you to fix problems to keep customers satisfied because you were mostly OK to deal with. Carla - you should not be working the phones nor the front desk because you SUCK at handling reservations and repeatedly caused me problems. Sheila - you're a doll, but we will not be back. Dave - if you're reading this & feel like having this review upped to 2 stars CALL ME (I know this is a shocking concept for you to actually CALL one of your customers) and apologize for the grief you caused me during my wedding planning process.

First breakfast was really good, lots of fruit. They ran out of wine at the wine and cheese. There are some repairs needed. When I inquired about wifi when I made the reservation I was told that they had wifi. Well they do have wifi, but the signal is very weak and rarely works. Nice people. Our room was hot and stuffy on first day and they do not have air conditioning.

As our first bed and breakfast this was quite an enjoyable one with good ambiance. The Zaballa house has historic style but modern upgrades: the rooms were a decent size, electric fireplace, individual attached bathroom, tall windows with nice views and Victorian furniture! One of my biggest complaints was that our bed was quite creaky which is not ideal for a romantic weekend away! However the breakfast was quite good even though it was light. Lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, quiche and toast. All in all we would go back for another weekend; the Zaballa house had a relaxed Victorian Coastal feel which made it seem like home!

Stayed here last October for a birthday getaway weekend. Great location on the main drag of town, easy to walk to dinner & bars - even the beach. Our experience was great because I believe we stayed in the best room in the house - upstairs in the historic building, looking out across the street, where a cute music store played light jazz each morning we woke up. Staff were always very friendly and we enjoyed the wine & cheese afternoon tasting session. Agree with other reviewers that it's a bit of an older crowd, not much mingling with other guests. Took off a star mainly because the breakfast wasn't very good. I think we ended up eating less than half and finding lunch elsewhere. They also ran out of room on the dining table so a dozen of us were forced to cram on couches and chairs in the living room. Not a great time when you're decently hungover.

I will NEVER stay at this hotel! I booked a room using their online reservations and received a confirmation. I immediately called the hotel to verify that the room I booked was dog friendly as we are traveling with our small dog. I was told the room was pet friendly and our reservation was confirmed. I received a call from the hotel about 2 hours later saying that my reservation wasn't valid because someone had called and wanted to book 4 rooms, so they gave them our room! The woman who called was very curt and never apologized for booking out our room. I had to struggle to find a room with only a week in advance during the busy month of October for this area. The only thing I am grateful for was that I found out before I showed up at the hotel! And I'm grateful for the kind woman who owns the Half Moon Bay Inn who worked so hard to accommodate us and reserve us a suite!!
